What is ALGON?

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria ALGON is the umbrella body of heads of Local government councils in Nigeria and was founded on November 28, 1999. All elected Chairmen of local government area councils of Nigeria are members, for the duration of their respective tenure in office.

A strong non-partisan institution which actively and effectively promotes inclusiveness, democratic values, good governance and sustainable development. To provide a platform for collaboration amongst the Executive Chairmen on matters of public policy and good governance.

ALGON and Politics?

ALGON is a non-partisan association that brings together the elected Chairmen of the country’s 776 local government area councils to promote unity, good governance, better understanding and cooperation among states, as well as a healthy and beneficial relationship between the local government councils and other tiers of government.

Membership Composition

An ALGON Chapter is present in each of the 36 States in Nigeria and is made up of Chairmen of all the local government area councils in the State. After council elections and Chairmen are elected into office, the Chairmen meet and elect one of their peers to be the Chairman of that State’s Chapter. The ALGON Chapter Chairman coordinates all ALGON activities in the State.
